Gareth Scriven was lonely. Walking slowly through Johnston Gate to Harvard Yard, he felt the kind of dull, aching lonely that only comes from knowing that your best friend and lifelong supporter was gone from this earth, and you miss him with every breath. His sainted older brother, Archie, had been killed in a freak accident while traveling through the plains of Colorado, and Gareth feared that he would never again be able to smile, to laugh, or to enjoy his daily stroll across the college yard under the canopy of autumn leaves.
