Meet Penelope Dreadful

Recently Denise Levenick posted an extremely interesting comment to an old photograph on the footnoteMaven. Shades was so taken by the writing and the insight into the photograph that a "Weekend With Shades Saturday Column," Penelope Dreadful and The Story Behind The Photograph, was born.

Once a month Denise will create a "Penny Dreadful" to accompany a unique old photograph. What is a "Penny Dreadful" you ask? Penny Dreadfuls (also called penny number and penny blood) was a term applied to nineteenth century British fiction publications, usually lurid serial stories appearing in parts over a number of weeks, each part costing a penny. The term, however, soon came to encompass a variety of publications that featured sensational fiction.

Meet Penelope Dreadful as she tells us in her own words what we can expect from her sensational monthly column. Trust me, no one could do this as well as Denise. You will not be disappointed and you will be highly entertained.

Bring your penny to Shades Saturday, March 7, for
"All That Was Needed. . . "
